The Little Bittern, the smallest Ardeid, is a summer visitor which breeds in ditches, reed beds and which winters in Africa. It is smaller than a Moorhen. In flight, creamy wing patches in adults, less clear cut in juveniles and quick jerky wingbeats are characteristic. The song is mostly, but not exclusively, nocturnal and is a "hogh", repeated every 2.5 seconds.
